Helen Hankey

Helen Marie Hankey (Gaukler) born March 5, 1925, died September 13, 2019.

Born in Lidgerwood, North Dakota, Helen graduated from Saint John’s School of Nursing in Fargo. While working at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis a mutual friend introduced her to Robert Hankey whom she married in 1947. Together she and Bob raised seven children in Staples. Helen was a nurse, director of nursing, and assistant hospital administrator. After retirement, Helen and Bob traveled around the US and spent much time with their children and grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, sister Betty, brother Bob, sons in law Greg Hani and Steve Otteson, grandson Charlie and great grandson Brandon. She is survived by her children MaryKay (Bob) Burfeind, Allain, Toni Otteson, George (Lenore), John (Denise), Michele (Don) Anderson, Bobby (John) Wangaard, twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, her siblings Mary and Norma and many nieces and nephews. Her brother John died September 29.

A memorial service will be held in Staples, Minnesota on October 19, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church. Visitation will be at 10 a.m.
