Robert Johnston

November 24, 1934 — July 13, 2025

Backus, MN

Robert “Bob” Johnston, Sr., passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 90, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, with family by his side.

Born on November 24, 1934, in Mapleton, MN, Bob was the fourth of nine children to Archie and Lora (Bell) Johnston. After graduating from Mapleton High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After Bob got out of the Navy, he attended Mankato State University and earned a degree in Business Education. Bob went on to start his teaching career and spent 27 of his 31 years teaching at the Backus High School. Later, the schools consolidated into Backus-Pine River High School where Bob remained until his retirement in 1993.

A dedicated member of the Backus American Legion for over 60 years, Bob served as Gambling Manager and volunteered in numerous Legion activities. He also gave his time generously to the Brainerd VA, Backus Community Meals, and other local causes. In his free time, Bob loved hunting and fishing with friends—always enjoying the time spent with them and the stories and laughter they shared.

On October 20, 1973, Bob married Judy (Doering). Together they were blessed to share 52 years of love, laughter, and companionship. They enjoyed playing cards with neighbors, traveling with friends and family, and especially spending time with their grandchildren. Bob was a wonderful, loving father, grandpa Bob, and great-grandpa Bob. He had a special way of staying connected to each of them, no matter their age. Whether he was playing cards or games, teaching them to fry up fish, or simply watching them with a smile, his presence was a steady and joyful part of their lives.

In April 2025, Bob moved to Farmside Senior Living in Backus due to health reasons. Though his time there was brief, he quickly formed bonds with staff and residents. He received wonderful care in a warm and loving environment. Despite the challenges of dementia and a stroke that took his ability to speak, Bob’s soft-spoken and good-natured spirit never left. He will be remembered for his constant smile, quiet strength, and the joy he brought to those around him. He lived a life of love and kindness—and he will be missed.

Bob is survived by his wife, Judy; daughter, Heather (Cory) Strandlien; son, Robert Jr. “Rob” (Katie) Johnston; grandchildren, Madisen (Jake) Ubert, Macy (Carter) Strandlien, Kenna Strandlien, Robert III “RJ” Johnston, and Anna Johnston; great-grandchildren, Nash and Reid Ubert; siblings, Maxine Larson, Gary Johnston, Karen (Bob) Knoof, Rick Johnston, and Ron Johnston; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Lora (Bell) Johnston; sisters, Donna Braun and Ruth Ann Flemming; and brother, Bradley Johnston.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hackensack, MN, with visitation one hour prior. A celebration of life will follow at the Backus American Legion. A private family burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in the veteran’s section.
