Richard 'Dick' Sampson

Richard A. Sampson, 86, formerly of Motley, MN, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025, in Brainerd, MN.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 31, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Motley Free Methodist Church in Motley, MN. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Motley City Cemetery.

Richard was born on January 5, 1939, in Ayr, North Dakota, to Peter and Christine Sampson. He married the love of his life, Pearl H.C. Hoeck, on August 16, 1958, in Motley, where they made their home and raised their family.

Richard worked for El-Ray in Motley for 41 years and later drove truck for Holiday for 15 years. Even after retiring at age 75, he continued to stay active as caretaker at Clearwater Estates, where he enjoyed helping others and keeping things running smoothly.

He and Pearl were longtime members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Motley. Richard will be remembered for his strong work ethic, kind heart, and deep love for his family.

He is survived by his children, Sherri Lee Johnson (James) of Motley, Steven Peter Sampson (Jeff Raposa) of Denver, CO, and Jill Marie Moen (David) of Ottertail, MN; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Ila Moga (Al) of Independence, WI; brother in-law EV Evanson of Shoreview, MN, along with many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pearl, his son Timothy Richard Sampson, his parents, sisters June McElroy, Rose Anderson, and Alta Evanson, and brother Gordon Sampson (Yvonne) of Motley.

He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, faith, and love that will be cherished by all who knew him.
