Randy Smith, born November 1, 1960, in Staples, Minnesota, to Jack and Dixie Smith, passed away January 1, 2026 after a courageous battle with ALS, fighting with strength and determination until the very end.
Randy met the love of his life, Linda, in 1982. Together they moved to Texas, but Randy soon realized his heart belonged back home. Missing Minnesota and the farm life he loved, they returned home, and on August 11, 1986, Randy and Linda were married. Together they built a life and raised a family grounded in love, hard work, and strong values. Randy was a true farmer at heart. He found joy in working the land, caring for his calves—of which he was extremely proud—and spending late nights sharing a beer and stories. Time at the cabin with his family brought him great happiness. Randy worked as long as he possibly could, known for his strength, grit, and unwavering work ethic.
Randy is survived by his loving wife, Linda Smith; his children, Rachael Smith, Codi (Kory) Wilson, and Zachary Smith; and his cherished grandchildren: Evah, Nyah, Sophia and Elmer Noska, Jayden, Jayce, Logan and Lacelynn Wilson, and Evritt Smith. He is also survived by his parents, Jack and Dixie Smith; his sisters, Debbie (Ken) Myers, Dusti Nordell (Tom Daly) and Roddy (Lori) Smith; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his mother-in-law Bernadette Wartner and father-in-law Hubert Wartner; brother-in-law, Michael Grittner; Aunts and Uncles Lil and Bob Richner, Jeanne Brown, Bob Rollins, Dwayne Dukowitz, George Webster, Bill and Kaye Vukelich, Danny Vukelich; cousins Brenda, Janelle, Linda, and Duff; and his best friend, Tom Baumgartner.
Randy will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held on January 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Motley Free Methodist Church, with the funeral service following at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided after the service. Following lunch, everyone is welcome to join in honoring Randy’s memory with a drink at Ten-Hi, just as he would have liked.
