Marlys Bernice Hoefs Weiss, age 92, of Pine River, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2017, in Wadena. Marlys was born on March 10, 1925, in Pequot Lakes, MN, to Gus and Inga Hoefs. In the spring of 1930, when Marlys was five, the family moved to their farm on the west side of Walden Township, Cass County. She had one brother, Gerald, whom she loved very much. Together they attended Bark School which was located on their family farm and whose teachers boarded at their home. Using the family team and wagon, they attended Maple Hill Lutheran Church. Marlys was the oldest member of Maple Hill Church at the time of her passing. After finishing eighth grade she helped out at home. On June 9, 1943, she married William Weiss and traveled with him during his Navy enlistment. In 1951 William and Marlys bought their farm in Walden Township where they farmed for 44 years. Marlys was very active in her church as a Sunday School teacher and member of Ruth-Naomi Circle. She enjoyed making quilts for family and charity, was a Grey Lady Volunteer, 4-H leader and raised beautiful African Violets. Her entire life was devoted to giving to family and friends. Even as dementia overtook her mind and body, she still worried about her family and friends.
Marlys is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Gerald Leverington of Wadena; grandchildren: Karla (Rich) Guldseth of Wadena, Dean (Deb) Leverington of Pine River, Janell (Steve) Madison of Brainerd; great grandchildren, Krista and Jordan Guldseth, Wyatt and Morgan Leverington, Ashley Ebel, Grant and Calvin Madison; six sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gerald; and her husband of 72 years, William.
The family thanks Karla and Rich and the entire staff at Inga's Place and Knute-Nelson hospice for their devoted and exceptional care.
Services will be 11 AM on Thursday, March 30, at First Lutheran Church, Pine River. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 PM on Wednesday at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
