Margaret J. Hines

September 13, 1925 — August 15, 2022

Little Falls

Margaret was born in Scandia Valley, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Hattie (Smolka) Cantleberry. She and her siblings (Leticia, Charles, Henry Jr. and Paul) attended Scandia Valley Country School. She graduated from Motley High School in 1944 and married Detmer Hines on June 5th of that year. While Detmer finished his enlistment, Marge worked in a Little Falls ammunition plant.

She loved gardening, antiquing, and was a self-taught seamstress and quilt-maker who was sewing, crocheting and crafting into her last days. As a young teen Marge began collecting stamps, a hobby she enjoyed for more than 80 years. Family and friends regularly sent her stamps off their daily mail, a habit they’re sadly finding hard to break. While living in Warren, Marge also worked in the local greenhouse-and-flower shop and through the years helped in the business activities of her children.

Marge was a busy farmer’s wife and homemaker. She was a wonderful cook and always set a beautiful table for holidays and special occasions at the farm, of which there were many. Flying with Detmer and the family to Canada was always a highlight. Marge helped catch fish—she was also the best at cleaning and cooking them! She was the beating heart of the family farm, taking care of the lawn, gardens, feeding all who visited and even entertaining us once in a while with a tune on the concertina.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings Tish, Henry Jr. and Charles. She is survived by her brother Paul Cantleberry of Motley, daughter Susan (Steve) Harris of Motley, son Carl (Kit Gohl) Hines of Apple Valley, granddaughter Heather (John) Brinkhaus of Minneapolis, great-grandchildren (Margaret (Maisie) and Eloise), nieces, nephew and many friends. Margaret’s passing creates an empty space filled only by the wonderful memories we’ll hold dear forever.

Margaret will be laid to rest at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls on September 13, 2022.

Arrangements are entrusted to Brenny Family Funeral Chapel, Randall.
