John Joseph Klemp, of Brainerd, MN, and Highland Park, IL, was born on May 12, 1921 in Highland Park, IL, and passed away peacefully at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN, on August 3, 2019. Preceded in death by his parents, John A, and Sophia; siblings, Matthias, Earl and Richard Klemp. Survived by daughter, Marie (Brian) McNamara of Pequot Lakes, MN; son, Peter Klemp, of Fox Developmental Center, Dwight, IL; grandchildren, Leo (Jessica) McNamara, of Minneapolis, MN, Brendan and Ian McNamara, Pequot Lakes, MN; great granddaughters, Nora and Maeve; sisters, Regina Willems of Kenosha, WI, Marian Ryan of Highland Park, IL, special nephews David, Jeff and Todd Klemp, and many other nieces, nephews, and great nephews.
John served his country as a pilot in the 389th Bomb Group in the Army Air Corps group during WWII and later served in the Korean conflict. After the war, John earned his B.S. in agriculture from Washington State University and began a career in industrial sales. He also served as Commander of the American Legion Post #738, Deerfield, IL. John was one of the founding members of Fox Developmental Center Family and Friends, and was instrumental in many fundraising projects, including an accessible bus for residents. An avid outdoorsman, he will be remembered for his love of fishing and hunting. For the last several years, John attended Breath of Life Adult Day Services in Brainerd, MN, where he enjoyed many activities and fishing outings, keeping his memory and sense of humor strong.
Mass of Christian Burial to be held at All Saints Catholic Church, Brainerd, MN, 11 A.M. on August 14 with visitation one hour prior to the service, followed by 2:00 internment at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Camp Ripley. The family wishes to thank Breath of Life, the staff at St. Otto’s Care Center, Little Falls, Harmony House in Brainerd, and St. Croix Hospice for their kindness and care.
