John Leonard Barber Jr., age 82, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Brainerd, Minnesota.
John was born on July 8, 1944, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Mardell (Johnson) and John Leonard Barber Sr. He graduated from high school in Duluth and shortly thereafter proudly joined the United States Army. John served for three years before receiving an honorable discharge. Following his military service, he continued his education and earned his teaching degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth.
In 1973, John moved to Brainerd to begin his teaching career. He spent close to 30 years teaching fourth grade, making a difference in the lives of countless students and families throughout the community. Teaching was an important part of John’s life, and he took great pride in the relationships he built with his students over the years. In conversations with former students, many would share memories of games played in the classroom earning them important classroom roles such as line leader or first to lunch. These stories always made him smile.
In 1993, John met his forever partner, Sandy Larson. Together, they shared 33 wonderful years filled with love, family, adventure, and travel.
John was a proud member of the American Legion and had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He enjoyed woodworking and had a special passion for collecting antique fishing lures. John treasured his family and they shared memories of camping, ice fishing and backyard sports. His grandchildren remember New Year’s Eve overnights, trips to Pizza Ranch and Easter egg hunts where the baskets were overflowing. His adventurous spirit, love of the outdoors, and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures will be remembered by all who knew him.
John is survived by his significant other of 33 years, Sandy Larson; his children, Kevin (Kim) Barber, Bryan (Gina) Barber, and Nicole Stirewalt; nine grandchildren; sisters, Carol White, Donna (Larry) Olson, and Patsy (Greg) Harding; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Jeff Stirewalt.
