James Alan Schmidt, 88, passed away on October 20, 2026.
Jim was born on May 14, 1938, in Little Falls, Minnesota, to Leo and Irene (Abel) Schmidt.
Jim worked as a machinist for the railroad. He loved trains and enjoyed taking train trips across the country with his family.
Jim enjoyed many hobbies, including art, music, fishing for walleyes, deer hunting, playing cards and dice, visiting casinos, watching wildlife, reading, and watching the History Channel. He was also a loyal fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Gophers.
Jim loved spending time with friends, especially meeting for breakfast, sharing stories, and enjoying a good cup of coffee. One thing everyone knew about Jim was that he preferred a good cup of coffee, not instant.
Most of all, Jim loved his family. He cherished time with his grandchildren and enjoyed family trips, spending time in Texas, and making memories with those he loved. Whether traveling or simply gathering together, Jim was happiest when surrounded by family and friends.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kathy; his sons, Matt (Kizzy) Schmidt, Chris (Donna) Schmidt, and Danny (Leah) Schmidt; and his grandchildren, Ryan, Sara, Makai, Cole, and Kameron. He is also survived by his brother, Mike (Diane) Schmidt; sisters-in-law, Erin Keeley and Patty (Bob) Lynam; and many other relatives and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Irene Schmidt; stepmother, Anne Schmidt; sister, Jan Pohl; brother, Everett Schmidt; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Schmidt and Cheryl Winzenburg; brothers-in-law, Tom Pohl and Kevin Keeley; niece, Brigid Lynam; nephew, Allen Pohl; and family members, Gary and Janice Johnson.
Jim will be remembered through family gatherings, fishing trips, Vikings games, wildlife watching, and every good cup of coffee shared in his honor.
A service will be held at a later date.
