Herbert Underhill

Herbert Doyle Underhill, born on October 5, 1937, in Grand Rapids, MN, to Doyle and Madalene (Sheldon) Underhill, passed away on October 23, 2026, in Brainerd, MN.

Herb attended school in Longville, MN, until 10th grade where he then transferred to and graduated from Backus, MN. Herb’s mother passed away when he was 13, which affected him greatly. As a teenager he worked in the farming and timber fields as well as at a feed store. When he was 15, he met his future wife, Rita. After high school, Herb was employed in Minneapolis, married Rita, and rented an apartment in North Minneapolis. The couple purchased their first home a couple years later. In his mid-30’s, they moved up north to Pine River, MN, and shortly after he started his own business. In 2009, Herb battled cancer at the age of 72, later going into remission. After selling his business and retiring, he built their home where they spent the next 16 years, after which they moved to a home on the Pine River Golf Course.

Herb is survived by his wife, Rita Underhill; sons, Dale (Dorothy) Underhill and Mark Underhill; siblings, Fred (Lynn) Underhill, Wally (Sharon) Underhill, and Ruth (Don) Paulson; grandchildren, Katie (Chase) Johnson, Alicia Underhill, Brian (Beverly) Taylor, Brian Hulke, and Gary (Mara) Underhill; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Herb is preceded in death by his daughter, Becky Underhill Swenson.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at New Life Community Church in Pine River. A visitation will be held the hour prior to the service.
