Frank N. McLean

Frank Norman McLean, age 83, passed away peacefully at home in Brainerd, surrounded by loving family and caring Hospice staff after a long battle with cancer.

He was born to Reginald “Rex” Finney and Sarah Louise “Sally” Hall on October 14, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Pine River, Minnesota, as well as Chicago, graduating from Pine River High School in 1960. Following a year of college in Florida, Frank worked and lived in the Twin Cities. He returned to Pine River and married Virginia Ecker in 1963. A few years later, they moved to Texas, eventually returning to Minnesota and settling in the Pequot Lakes area.

Frank worked hard all his life at a variety of jobs, the most satisfying of which were real estate sales, recruiting, and management with United Farm (later United Country) and real estate appraisal with Wolverton & Associates.

He played hard, too, including McFest (a giant annual summer party), playing couples’ and mens’ poker for over twenty-five years, traveling, and socializing wherever he went. He never met a stranger.

Lions International combined all his loves: people, playing, and service. Lionism rewarded him with awards, titles, activities, projects, and—most importantly—his deepest friendships in both the Nisswa Lions and Nevis Lions Clubs.

In 1991, Frank married Barbara Bostrom Dickey and acquired two teenaged children. His busy life became that much busier and more interesting.

He leaves behind his wife Barb; children Toni McLean, Michael Patrick McLean (Mary-Ellen), Katherine Hass (Andy), Philip Dickey; grandchildren Brady McLean (Becca), Logan Dickey (Jayda), Calloway Hass, Paisley Hass, Odiah Love; and great-granddaughter Milah Dickey; "bonus" son Michael Pierson (Kim), ”bonus” grandchildren Chelsey Gunderson, Tyler Pierson (Caitlyn), Rachel Nordell (Tyler); many nieces and nephews, and myriad friends around the world including sixteen foreign exchange children.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Nisswa Lions Club or Nevis Lions Club.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 PM, Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Halvorson-Taylor Funeral Home in Brainerd. Visitation is at 3 PM at Halvorson-Taylor, Brainerd.
