Donald Thompson

Donald E. Thompson, 77, of Hillman, MN died at Mille Lacs Health System Hospital in Onamia, MN on Saturday, March 4, 2017. Services for Donald will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 11:00AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hillman, MN with Pastor Jean Megorden and Minister Shirley Adolphson officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00AM at the church.

Donald was born on January 25, 1940 in St. James, MN to Donald and Edna (Knutson) Thompson. He graduated from St. James High School in 1958. Donald worked as a mason doing brickwork after graduation. He married Phyllis Alt in Estherville, IA on March 20, 1965. They moved to Minneapolis for a short time before moving to New Brighton. Donald attended Dunwoody Institute in 1965. He and Phyllis bought a cabin in 1976 on Platte Lake near Hillman, MN where they spent their weekends. Donald began his career with the City of Minneapolis, first as a surveyor, then building inspector, before working as the supervisor for the Truth in Housing Department. After Donald retired in 1995, he and Phyllis moved to their cabin on Platte Lake.

Donald worked as a reserve police officer for the City of Minneapolis. He also served on the Richardson Township Board, the County Board of Adjustments, Platte Lake Property Owners Board, and as Gambling Manager for Platte Lake Association. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and traveling. Donald also loved cruising around in vintage cars.

Donald is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, Denise (Ron Dietrich) Bergondo of Colorado Springs, Co, Derrek (Melissa) Thompson of Richwood, TX, and Ranone (Steve Lumley) Thompson of South Haven, MN; two grandchildren, Alexander Thompson and Victoria Thompson; six great-grandchildren; sister, Dianna (Bob) Wittmers of Minneapolis, MN; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Edna Thompson; and a sister, Eldora. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Randall, MN.
