Dale Fogle

March 8, 1926 — May 25, 2011

Dale Fogle, 85, of Crosslake, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at his home. Services will be at 10 AM, Saturday, May 28 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake with Pastor Fred Cressman officiating. Family and friends are welcome to gather one hour prior to services. Interment with military honors from American Legion, Crosslake Post will take place at Pinewood Cemetery after the service.

Dale Fogle was born at Scranton, IA, in 1926, to Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Fogle. He was one of a family of ten children. It was during junior high school that his father passed away and the only adult male guidance that he received was from his coach. It was also at this time that he decided to make coaching and teaching his career. In high school, Dale participated and lettered in football, basketball, and track and during the summer months, he was employed as a lifeguard at the local swimming pool. He was also in Boy Scouts and the Iowa State Guard.

Upon graduation from high school in 1944, he entered the Navy. He went to Farragut, ID, where he served as an instructor in swimming, Judo and gymnastics. After several months of this duty, he went to sea on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Gilbert Islands. His duty there consisted of gunner on a 40mm anti-aircraft station and physical education instructor. His ship was attached to several fleets at different times but always in the Asiatic Theatre of Operation. Dale saw combat action in the Philippines, Borneo, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

Dale was discharged in June of 1946 and immediately enrolled at Upper Iowa University where he participated in football, basketball and track and also was lifeguard at the college pool. While in college he organized a Boy Scout troop and served as scoutmaster for three years. He graduated from UIU in 1949 and later attended summer school at Drake University, Winona State Teachers College and Iowa State Teachers College. In 1960, he obtained an M.A. Degree in Secondary Supervision from Greely, CO.

Dale taught for 39 years and coached for 37 of those years along with serving as high school principal and athletic director in various schools in Northeast Iowa. Some of Dale's coaching achievements were as follows: Girls Basketball - Coaching Record (463-106), 8 teams to the state tournaments (State Championships, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places) 12 girls became members of All State and 2 went on to make All-American Basketball Teams, Girls Track won the State Track and Field Meet with several state records, Boys Track achieved several state records, Football - three undefeated teams. Dale received the Golden Plaque of Distinction Award for Iowa Girls Coaches, was named Iowa Association of Track Coach of the Year, and was inducted into the UIU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Dale retired in 1987 and moved to Crosslake, MN. Since his retirement, Dale kept very busy developing, producing and selling educational and manual dexterity products.

He will be missed by his wife, Charlotte; his children, Heidi Fogle, TX, Randy (Mary) Fogle, of Deerwood, and Sandy (Allan) Loney, of Brainerd; his siblings, Betty Woolcott, Norma Trones, Elsie Perreten, five grandchildren, Galen, Shayna, Maranda, Haley, and Colter; two great-grandchildren, Daniel and Emilie. He was preceded by Lucille Robertson, Melvina Phillips, Opal Tomlinson, Agnes Jacobson, Ernie Fogle, and an infant brother.
