Betty M. Hagelin, 92, of Brainerd, MN, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, in Brainerd. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Betty was born on September 16, 1933, in Brainerd, Minnesota, to Dewey and Elsie (Barrett) McMains. She was raised in the Brainerd and Pillager area and graduated from Pillager High School. During High School she was a Varsity Cheerleader for the Basketball Team.
Betty later moved to Minneapolis, where she met and married William Toensing in 1957.
Betty resided in Minneapolis and California and cared for her family, including acting in the role as primary caregiver for her son, Richard, who suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. Following her divorce in 1973, she returned to the Brainerd area. She married Harvey Hagelin in 1976, and together they moved to Colorado. After Harvey’s death, Betty returned to Brainerd and worked as a cook for the priests at St. Francis Parish in Brainerd for many years, a role she truly enjoyed before retiring. She continued to reside in Brainerd until her passing.
Betty will be remembered for her kindness, dedication, and the care she showed to those around her.
She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Toensing; her husband, Harvey Hagelin; her parents, Dewey and Elsie McMains; and her sister, Judith Noga of Bemidji.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Toensing) Janicki and her husband, Robert Janicki; her grandchildren, John Janicki and Kathryn Janicki; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Amy Price and Deloris Ebinger of Brainerd.
Arrangements are entrusted to Brenny Family Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
