Alvin John Bauman was born at home in Jasper, MN, on October 25, 1928, to John and Edna (Schlapkohl) Bauman. He grew up on the family farm near Jasper with his 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Alvin received his education at Pipestone County District 26 Country School near his home for 8 years. He helped his parents on the family farm until called to serve his country in the US Army in 1953. Alvin completed basic training at Camp Chafee in Arkansas and trained as a helicopter mechanic in Texas. He served his time in Korea for 14 months as a helicopter mechanic and after 2 years he returned to Jasper, working at the Jasper Lumber Yard for several years.
Alvin married Marlene Bahn on January 16, 1960, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper. They were blessed with 3 children. They first lived near Pipestone for 1 year and then moved to a farm near Hardwick and farmed the land. After a farm sale, he went to work at Wilder Farms, a large cattle feeding operation near Huron Lake, MN, and later worked at Midwest Supply in Slayton, MN. He lived in Avoca, MN, until moving back to Jasper where he was a custodian at the Jasper Elementary School. When the school closed, he was a self-employed carpenter until his retirement. Alvin and Marlene bought a home in Jasper in 1972 and lived there until May of 2019 when they moved to Pine River, MN, to be closer to family.
Alvin was baptized at home, confirmed, and was a lifetime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper. When he was no longer able to drive, Pastor Travis Lauterbach began home visits on behalf of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Backus, MN. He enjoyed his many years of hunting and fishing and had many memories that he loved to share. He enjoyed the outdoors, tinkering in his shop, gardening, and spending time with family.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Marlene; children, Alan of Pine River, Debra of Crosslake, and Curtis (Ann) of Pine River; sister, Margie of Fridley; 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, as well as his step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Gordon and Walter, and sister, Lavon.
A service for Alvin will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Brenny-Kline Funeral Home in Pine River. A visitation will be held the hour prior to the service.
