Allan Roger Amundson was born on August 29, 1949. He passed at the United Hospital in St. Paul on Saturday, January 24th surrounded by family after a massive stroke on January 16th.
He was best known as ‘Mr. A’ to his many students he taught at Pequot Lakes Elementary School from 1972 through 2009. Teaching was more than a career for him – it was a calling, and he left a lasting impact on generations of students. He earned his degree at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, MN.
Beyond the classroom he coached Girls Softball for many years, served on the Sibley Township Board and spent many summers as a Park Ranger for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in Crosslake and Grand Rapids. He loved making people laugh and was always ready to tell a story – often adding his own creative flair along the way. He treasured time spent with family and friends. He enjoyed boating, skiing, 4 wheeling and hunting. In his later years, he took pride in riding 5 miles a day on his recumbent bike and always enjoyed a cup of coffee with his ‘Buds’ at the A-Pine. He was a devoted member of the Grace United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He deeply loved his church family and cherished the fellowship and friendships he found with them.
Al is survived by his wife, Millie, of 52 years; his daughter, Amanda (Scotty) Cook of Prescott, WI; and his son, Shawn (Lori) Amundson of Duluth, MN; his 5 grandchildren, Hanna Cook, Malia Cook, Eliott Cook, Finley Amundson and Austan Amundson; brothers-in-law, Ken (Barb) Salo and John (Tari) Salo; sister-in-law, Patty (Blaine) Sawdey; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lillian Amundson; his in-laws, William and June Salo; sister-in-law, Judy Hukriede; and nephews, Terry Sawdey and Tony Sawdey.
Al will be remembered for his quick wit, generous heart, and the countless lives he touched as a teacher, friend, and family man. His legacy lives on in the stories shared, the laughter remembered, and the love he gave so freely.
Visitation will be at 10:00am at the Grace United Methodist Church in Pequot Lakes with the service to follow on Saturday, January 31st.
